What with the
end of summer ominously approaching, I figured it would be a good time for a
pick-me-up out of the pure denial that the dreaded begin of school hovers nearby. So here's a 'top-ten' list (of sorts) with, what I think, are the must-have
items and trends of this fall.
1. Knits
Besides absolutely loving knitwear, knits are almost always in for the fall. I love the
comfortable quality of the fabric and just how
cozy it is when sitting on your bed reading a book with a nice cup of tea as the
autumn leaves begin to fall, oh how poetic. Of course, down by the equator here in Singapore that is a slightly less relevant description of what I'd be doing, but who doesn't love a little cozy-ness every now and then. And besides, who doesn't look cute in a
slouchy, knit hat.
2. Oversized... well everything
Oversized sweaters, jackets, coats, shirts... you name it, a designer has put it on the runway for their fall fashion show. Designers like
Isabel Marant and Diane von Furstenburg have decided to bust out the oversized coat for this fall, so who's to question these style geniuses. And anyway, who doesn't love a huge sweater to snuggle in.
3. Oriental/Eastern prints
Woo! To all you out there living in Asia this is your time to take those elaborately printed scarves and tops out of the closet. The likes of Proenza Schouler have brought out their
Asian influence (Karl Lagerfeld + Shu Uemura *cough* *cough*) with
kimino styled jackets, bringing a
modern edge to these seemingly
traditional outfits and prints.
4. Leather

Yes you can finally use that
leather jacket, one of the few benefits of summer being over. Black leather adds a
little edge and
classic style to any look, from the
simplest, jeans and a loose top to a feminine, short dress. Leather doesn't just mean jackets by the way,
boots and
bags are welcome too.
5. Stockings

This is a personal favorite accessory/item (accessory?? clothing item?? what are they?!). Especially helpful, not just style-wise but comfort-wise, as the temperature begins to drop in the fall. Also adds a bit of
formal or sexy to a look (depending on what you're going for).
6. Boots

I absolutely looooove boots. I just never get to use them, what with the constant 30 degree weather here in Singapore, but that never seems to stop me from wearing my
ankle boots out here.
Knee highs, ankle boots, all of them are bound to be put to good use this fall.
7. Plaid

Yes, I know, plaid. Plaid can sometimes be misinterpreted, I however think that a plaid shirt is an
essential item to have in one's closet. Jeans paired with a plaid button-down can never go wrong! Plaid can be anything from
edgy to very Nancy Drew-esque.
8. Lip gloss/lip balm
This may not be an item of clothing, but the weather is going to start taking a turn for the less-face-friendly, so to speak, and this is just a
precautionary measure (which you should all be taking regardless!!) to keep your lips from drying out as it gets
colder. Don't forget, your lips need
moisturizing too! (P.S. I swear by
Burt's Bees lip balm/lip gloss)
9. Scarves

One of my favorite accessories, scarves. Though I rarely get to use them, the
sheer satisfaction of walking out of the house wearing a scarf that seems to perfectly complement your outfit is
incomparable. Plus, scarves are probably the most
versatile accessory that I know, if you begin to get
hot and sweaty, you can tie it onto your
bag, or use it as a
belt.
10. Hats

Finally, hats. Yes this might be a bit of a repetition from knits, but
beanies, knit hats/caps, even top hats, will be able to come out this fall. Careful though, you know you don't want to mess up your
hair.
