TV show spotlight: Game of Thrones

I realize that this post is probably way overdue, but better late than never, right? All you GoT fans out there, don't kill me (however gruesome that death would turn out), but I legitimately JUST FINISHED watching the full first and second season.

Here are just a few examples of the amazing costume design that is Game of Thrones.

For those of you looking for a show to watch with some great costume design (done by Michele Clapton), this is definitely a show to watch. And on another not, I can not wait till season 3!!

P.S. There are so many outfits that I left out of here, and I'm sorry for that, but I feel that if I had included every single outfit I loved from this show I would be (a) spoiling a lot and (b) taking up a lot of space with this post.

P.P.S. Is it just me or does this show have some extremely nice neckpieces!

Casual Night Out

This weekend I went to a surprise party for a friend. It was really just a casual night out with friends in one of their houses by the pool. A barbeque-esque event. So here's what I generally like to wear on a night out.

(Top: Bayo, Jeans: Garage, Belt: Mom's closet)

Hope you enjoyed my first style post (with my own pictures :o). This really is my backup outfit, by the way, a white top just seems to work for me. Not too casual and not too formal and easily matched.

The Wedding Dress: Exhibition

Weddings. The ‘most important day of a woman’s life’, as we grow up believing. From the release of the doves to the five-tier wedding cake and the quivering of your hands as rings are exchanged. Every girl has had some sort of fantasy about this day, walking down the aisle, with the man of her dreams at the end waiting.

Over the weekend, I visited the National Museum of Singapore to see the wedding dress exhibit (“The Wedding Dress: 200 Years of Wedding Fashion”), and was pleasantly surprised. I don’t know what I was expecting, but this was altogether a great exhibit.

As I headed downstairs to where the exhibit hall is, outside the actual exhibition, a few ‘Singaporean’ wedding dresses are shown. By that they don’t actually mean traditional wedding dresses by the way, though they did show Peranakan wedding attire (for those of you that don’t know, ‘Peranakan’ refers to descendants of the Chinese that emigrated here back in the day). Basically, by this they meant wedding dresses that Singaporeans had worn previously in weddings. Some of them were nice, however I’m not one for the extremely beaded. I do loooooove lace though, and there was a lot of that! So delicate and beautiful, perfectly reflecting how a young women is when going into one of the most important days of their lives.

The dresses were beautiful. It was amazing to see the transformation of dresses beginning with the corsets and stiff, cage-like skirts with draping over them that must have been a pain in the ass to walk down an aisle with. From there it evolved to the flapper style dresses and bonnets, ever so reminiscent of the ‘Sense and Sensibility’ style wedding bonnets.

And then there were the iconic dresses of our time. You cannot possibly imagine the mini-heart attack I went through. Realizing that I was in the same room as a John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood and Vera Wang… ALL IN ONE ROOM!

John Galliano

Vivienne Westwood

Vera Wang

Gwen Stefani’s wedding dress, designed by Galliano, was absolutely gorgeous. I loved the pink at the bottom; it really made it different, definitely not the bad kind of different. Fortunately, there wasn’t the same kind of effect as someone dip-dying hair (I’m sorry if I’ve offended anyone, but dip-dying is just not my thing unless it’s perfect, *cough *Rachel Bilson *cough *).

And the absolute queen of wedding dresses. Miss Vera Wang. Holy bejeezus. Just marry me right now. The gorgeous fabric and layering, Wang’s prowess just emanating in the beautifully tailored dress… Yes it may not have been my favorite dress of hers, but it was an experience being close to one.

All in all I did love the exhibit, it was small and cozy, which also meant that it was crowded and annoyingly loud. However, I definitely miss exhibitions with fashion. I think the last one I went to being the Valentino exhibit here… that was a looong time ago. Take note other museums, fashion IS art, give designers some credit, not all of us can fly off to a runway show.

Clothes of the London Closing Ceremony

Yes, this was six days ago (I’m sorry for being late with this news!). Watching the Olympics was absolutely mind-blowing. It is amazing what athletes can do, the amount of training that must have taken! I’m sure everyone else that watched is thinking the same thing, “Why can’t I do that?!”.

Anyway, straying away from the point a bit there, the Brit pop culture. What with Annie Lennox, Jessie J, Take That, the Spice Girls… plus some of the greatest British models, including Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, gowns and gorgeous outfits are to be expected.

My personal faves:

1.     Annie Lennox: her red and black, Halloween + theatre-esque dress, her dancers’ dresses… just the theatricality and over-the-top attitude. Honestly, it kept making me think of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Dracula” had some very stylish offspring.
2.     Kate Moss: no her dress was not the greatest we’ve seen her in, but she is just gorgeous. From her hair to her figure, damn she makes me jealous.
3.     Take That: probably one of my favorite British bands to date. If any of you haven’t heard it yet get on Youtube and listen to “Love Love” by Take That (if you think it sounds familiar, it was on the X-Men First Class Soundtrack and is one of my absolute favorite songs by them, also one of the first ones I listened to). Outfit-wise, their jackets are classic soldier inspired detail jackets, and yes they really do always coordinate their clothes like that.

Fashion Fetish: Boots

Ankle. Knee-high. Mid-calf. These shoes come in an abundance of varying heights, styles and designs. From Western cowboy movie to New York City chic, boots are the one thing I absolutely YEARN for this fall, although they also happen to be the one thing that I can’t seem to afford.

The temptation to splurge is just asldkfhaalskdh … I can’t even…

1.    Valentino

2.     Alexander McQueen

3.     Isabel Marant

4.     Balenciaga

However, there are ways to save on these must have shoes…

1.    Steve Madden

2.     Aldo

3.    Big Buddha Wayne

4.     Asos

Either way, this is my current fashion fetish. Definitely need to get a pair of these sometime soon. They’re fashionable yet comfortable. They’re easy to accessorize, yet they can look absolutely gorgeous in the right outfit.

Personally, I love ankle boots. I would wear my black, suede ankle boots with a pair of skinny jeans, a loose white top, a long necklace, some oversized bracelets and possibly a fedora. Despite the fact that I live in a country where the daily temperature is about 25 to 30 degrees Celsius, I just looooove my boots.

Celeb Style Spotlight: Kate Middleton

I think we all know that the new Duchess has great style when it comes to gowns and dresses for the most formal of events, from her gorgeous, runway-worthy wedding gown to the beautiful light blue, turquoise dress at the Olympics. She does have to appear in just about every big event known to mankind in front of millions of people, that’s a lot of pressure on a girl to dress well. And Kate pulls it off with the finesse of a queen, I’m sure she does her grandmother-in-law proud.

Of course, every girl has some bad moments…

But Kate’s everyday style still manages to catch my eye, as well as many magazines’, as stylish and classy. Oh what a fashionable little Duchess you are Kate.
